Ringo’s Report: First Road Training at the Algarve Great Derby 2024
Greetings, fellow feathered friends and loyal followers! It’s Ringo, your faithful pigeon reporter, here to share the latest from our loft at the Algarve Great Derby. We’ve just completed our first road training, and it was an adventure full of new experiences.
Preparing for the Journey
The excitement began the day before the big training day. The trainers treated us to a relaxing bath with Bath Super-ExTerminator from pigeons.pt, ensuring our feathers were in top condition and free of any unwanted parasites. There’s nothing quite like a good bath to make you feel fresh and ready for new challenges!
Basketed and Ready
In the afternoon, it was time to get basketed. The temperature was warm, but we were kept in the shade, well protected from the extreme heat. It was our first time being placed in the baskets, a new and somewhat strange experience for many of us. The trainers made sure we had water in the baskets, teaching us how to drink in this confined space—an essential skill for the longer races to come.
A Night in the Truck
As the evening set in, we were loaded onto the truck. It was our first time spending the night away from the loft, and the new surroundings were both exciting and a bit unnerving. We settled in for the night.
The Big Day: First Road Training
With the first light of dawn, the truck began its journey to the release point. We could feel the anticipation building as we neared our destination. After arriving, we were given an hour to rest and acclimate to our new surroundings. It was a quiet moment, a calm before the storm of our first flight home.
The Release
Then came the moment we’d all been waiting for—the release. The baskets opened, and we were not sure we should get out but then we were….off, soaring into the open sky. It was a mix of excitement and uncertainty as we navigated this new experience. Finding home from an unfamiliar place was the challenge we had been training for.
The Journey Home
Groups of us quickly formed, each working together to find the way back to the loft. Some groups found their bearings and made it home swiftly, while others took their time, circling and exploring the landscape before finally making their way back. The thrill of seeing the loft in the distance was indescribable. We knew we had succeeded.
A Successful Return
We are proud to report that practically all pigeons found their way home. The trainers were thrilled with our performance, and we could feel their pride as they welcomed us back. This first road training was a significant milestone, and it has filled us with confidence for the future.
More Challenges Ahead
But there’s no time to rest on our laurels! The training distance will increase quickly, with sessions planned every second day. Our next training will take place on Monday, and we’re gearing up for the challenge. It’s going to be intense, but we’re ready to give it our all.
So there you have it, folks—the latest from the Algarve Great Derby. Our first road training was a resounding success, filled with new experiences and valuable lessons. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey. This is Ringo, signing off from the loft.
Fly high, stay strong, and always find your way home!
